Indexing the 1940's Census!

The long awaited 1940's US Census has finally arrived! I've had the opportunity to index a couple of the records with Family Search...Fun to see the format and be a part of it all.

Logged onto Ancestry.com today and found you can actually browse the census there, even though only a couple of the states are searchable at this point. So, of course, I browsed out there to look for the records of my relatives and found them! It took a bit of searching but worth the time investment to find them and be able to print my finds for my records.

Although I knew what towns my relatives had lived in during 1940 I didn't remember the exact addresses. I found the enumeration schedules on the site very helpful in narrowing down the amount of census records I would need to search to find them.

To get to those you just go to the 1940 is here tab, push START LOOKING , scroll down below the search box under INDEXING STATUS and choose the enumeration district finder....that will allow you to enter the state and city and give you a map of how they divided the area...so if you can remember what part of town they lived in...you can then go to the browse and choose that particular number/group of records to browse. It's awesome. Kinda cool to have a map of the town as it appeared in 1940 as well.

Genealogy...Really!!!!!

Last year I attended a Genealogy Conference in Salt Lake City, UT. My favorite part of the conference was reminiscent of the release of the 3rd book of the Harry Potter Series at my local bookstore.

The bookstore wheeled out this huge pallet of books all covered with a tarp and then one of the bookstore employees jumped up on the pile with the new release in hand and reverently held it out for all to see. There was an audible "sigh!" and collective "OH!!!" as she opened the book to display the title page. That's when the cheering and clapping started that lasted for about 2 to 3 minutes.honestly...it was an amazing crowd reaction. I wish I had recorded it all.

I never would have believed, as I sat among genealogy enthusiasts from all around the globe, that this would also be the reaction that the announcement made by the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" evoked! Their announcement was huge in genealogy history....they released 300 million new names on their website. WOW...that's right folks...300 MILLION. Totally amazing! Here is a link to an article about the release. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700028263/Mormon-church-to-add-300-million-names-this-week-to-online-genealogy-pool.html.

So this was over a year ago and in that year I have spent lots of time looking around for my ancestors. I have to say I have become happily acquainted with some new characters in my family tree and have had lots of fun doing it.

Wishing you Happy Journeys! Tamera J
